Sparkling Self Portrait
I am a geode, she said.
Round, shaped like the earth,
Rough and crusty on the outside.
But inside me, at my core,
There is treasure!
Dazzling crystals,
Amethyst, jasper, celestite,
Beautiful natural jewels,
Formed slowly over time,
Banded with concentric rings.
…I never knew what lay within
Until I was split open, broken apart,
And exposed to the light…

Beautifully said, and oh, so true! Even if it takes us many years to finally get it open and see what is within us, it is still worth the doing. Wonderful imagery - gets to the core for us all.
And we try so hard to shield ourselves, to protect ourselves, to remain whole, unbroken, and weep when our jewels spill to the earth around us. Beautifully said.

So much beauty is hidden from view as your poem so aptly describes. We must look deeply, split open so-to-speak to discover the true nature of a person or an object. Nature’s artwork can teach us much. We have to be receptive to know what is on the inside. Very well done.

Wonderful words - insightful and evocative !
This is so visual, Kerry. Well done.
I commented on this piece on your personal blog. But, again, I must say, I love this poem
Thank you all for your thoughtful, insightful words - the amazing thing is I took some of the phrases “Round, shaped like the earth”, “Formed slowly over time,” ” split open, broken apart, And exposed to the light” directly from a Wikipedia story on geodes!

This is marvellous, Kezza - I think it is one of the most empowering poems I have ever read.

“Found” pieces; wonderful insight!
Wonderful poem. Geodes are really cool, aren’t they?
At the very core we are each filled with treasure Kerry. This is beautifully crafted and very powerful.
