Peas as poetry! I love the onomotopoetic component, and the precision as the peas are used as punctuation. Alliteration was accidental, actually. till then.

Although, really, you have to have a wide ruthless streak to run a large household well – I imagine that while Ebony looks mild in her housekeeping role, she’s still much the same as the sea-going Ebony! Love the poem!

Ebony’s domestic and docile when she’s shelling peas on land, but don’t turn your back on her when she’s at sea. Wonderful imagery!

Your comment is right on, Lori! Ebony/The Captain does have two sides, “a wise bird” is a good way of saying it. Loved reading all the comments here, thank you. I enjoyed writing this piece, just out of the blue. I have always liked this image, I think it just “talked” to me!

On my first trip on the Calabar, Ebony abandoned me on the Island of the Bog People. However, the Captain was a wise bird and knew my time with the Bog people would only make me better able to traverse the wild realm of Lemuria……….

Looks can be deceiving Vi Her career on the high seas spans decades and she was not known for her kindly ways out there.

Ebony looks like such a kindly woman, one that a visitor would have no difficulty confiding in, and listening to any advice she might offer. A story teller, too, I don’t doubt. I can visualize children and grown-ups alike hanging on to her every word. Good work, Imogen, and Heather.
